Not that the D112 is the end all of kick drum mics, but if you couldn't get a good sound with it, you weren't using it right.

You must give up your ideas of accuracy and move over to the dark side. When you mic the individual drums, you mic to capture a certain aspect that helps it stick out in a mix. Aiming a mic at the hole will usually not give you a sound that works well for that.

If you don't want to tweak much, try placing the mic near the drummer's foot, and aim it at various places on the head until you find a sound that you like.

Otherwise, take the 2nd head off of the drum and place the mic inside the shell. How deep you go into the shell varies how much of the "druminess" you hear, and moving the placement of the mic between the center and the edge of the head varies how much of the beater "thwack" you'll get.

Then, in your mix, compress the snot out of it and you'll sound like everything else currently popular.
