In the studio, I never compress or gate during tracking, My choice of mic is the EV PL20. I only put some 3k shelved on it (about 2db) then as far as placement. I usually face it right in the hole up to the holder and depending on the kick drum, I'll move it up and face it somewhat in the drum wood but not much.If Your budget allows then the PL20 is the answer but if not. If the Mackie does not have a pad on the pre then I would suggest investing in one. Most low cost boards I have worked on usually do and have found I have had to use it in most situations.
