Worst Bass Drum Sound Ever. Q?

I am getting the worst bass drum sound on earth. We are recording our demo, but I am having a real hard time getting a good bass sound out of the Bass Drum.
I am using a Mackie 1202VLZ as the board. We are recording direct to a Fostex DMT8VL hard drive recorder. The Mic is an EV CO4. I have it aimed at the bass hole. I am getting heavy distortion.
Any insights into helping get a better bass drum sound?
