Re: Line array Horns

I think that you are getting confused here. Don't ask me too much about the theory behind it, I'm not a accoustics major!

The principle behind line array is quite simple. Very tightly controlled dispersion patterns that beam the sound at the audience. Effectively as an audience member you are supposed to be listening only to the output of the cabinet that is facing you. For this reason the cabinets arc vertically, but are only set up in a single width configuration. The supposed benefit is that phase cancellations that would ordinarily occur with a standard stack either side of the stage are minimised.

In theory this should be a major benefit, but the trade-offs are there also. Principally it is difficult to design a cabinet that has an even dispertion at all frequencies and it is not always possible to use a line array system in every venue. Typically you need a lot of height and because of the so called tightly controlled pattern the stacks need to be of a given number of cabinets regardless of the number of people you are covering. For this reason they seem to be favoured for outdoor events, arena's/large venues. I do know that on the Pro Sound Weboard this subject was bought up by someone thinking of buying line array and the general consensus was that a standard multi-cab system was far more flexible. As to the sound of line arrays, I personally haven't heard enough to be sure of my conclusions but they seem to have revived flagging sales in the PA industry. Possibly it's a little more to do with marketing than absolute sound. My $0.02 worth anyhow.

Regards

Roland
