Don't confuse point source theory with line source theory.Point source---sound travels out spherically.
Line source---sound travels out cylindrically.
The acoustic center is anywhere on that line, but you should perceive it to be where you are exactly 90 degrees to the line itself (i.e. the closest point on that line to you).
