Well, in general I agree with you. But, I really have no choice when doing remote recordings in small auditoriums, etc. I have to check the balance between the different players, and the e.q. settings of each. I prefer to get it as close as possible to the right sound at the time so that the studio touchups are as manageable as possible. Also, my "studio" is basically the spare bedroom of a condo and I can't always blast my Alesis nearfield monitors, especially late at night. I can record percussion, trumpet, and sax parts in the remote living room, thank goodness.That said, I need an accurate, flat set of headphones without the artificial bass boost typical of some like the Sony 7506's. My desire is to find out which of the AKG Studio series (all 55 ohm) is best sounding (most accurate). It's sounding like the AKG K240S, according to AKG's own web site and discussion group that I just stumbled on.
