See the link below to get a better understanding of compressors. (Its my web site). Use the compressor on inserts if you can. Grouping vocals to a compressor channel can hurt as much as help since the threshold will respond to the loudest signal - in effect causing the entire group to reduce in gain. If you are simply worried about protecting your power amps from distortion put it between the outputs of the desk and the power amp. If you have one singer in particular who needs to stand out but is all over the map use it on their channel (as an insert)
