Re: Compressor usage.

The thing about compressors is that you can't have too many of them. In your case to compress the entire mix either place it between the board and amp or in the output inserts if you have them. It's better to use separate compressors on subgroups, like one for all mics, one for all drums, one for instruments etc. The ultimate is to have compression/limiting/expansion on every input and output- which could entail buying a lot of compressors, or getting a board that has that feature built in, like the Yamaha 01V.
Compression and limiting is basically the same thing, but with different ratios. What is best is a compressor/limiter/expander, which controls the signal when it's there, and shuts the channel off when it's not.
