if anyone could help me out, i need suggestions on a decent pair of monitors for tracking/mixing in the nearfield. ideally, i'd like them to have good LF extension, good spl capability and be as accurate as possible. realistically, the LF extension isn't that critical since i don't mind working with a sub or 2, and since spl and accuracy seem to be mutually exclusive, i'd put more weight on accuracy. as i understand it, monitors are just a tool, particularly for translation, but i honestly believe (wrongly?) that a highly accurate monitor setup would serve me best. i have other systems i can check with. the music i work with, btw, is rather like old Ministry and old Manson, but a bit more percussive. so i need some monitors that will be able to handle this kind of material with no problems.
having said that, my options for auditioning monitors are limited here.. besides prosumer alesis and yamaha setups, all i have here is paradigm, b&w and some dynaudios that are always on loan. i didn't think the b&w's (n804, n805 was out) were quite right; didn't sound tonally accurate to me on cd's i think i'm very familiar with. same with the paradigms (don't rem the model). of course, i wasn't familiar with the associated equipment or the room, so i can't say for certain. i've often heard genelec suggested but i've yet to find any to audition. i've also heard genelec criticized for being rather hyped. some others frequently suggested on R.A.P are spendor, quested and westlake, none of which i've heard.. and i have no idea if any of those would be suitable for the kind of music i'm working with (is this really an issue?). lastly, i've been quite interested in the dunlavy sm-1 since it looks so damn good on paper and i like the dunlavy design philosophy. haven't heard them, though, and closest dealer is a good 8 hours out. beside that, they're just a bit more than i want to spend and i have doubts about their spl capability. but if they were that good, i don't have a problem spending $2K+ US on a pair, though i'd like to keep the price around $1500.
any suggestions?
