Uhm, depends on what you term as "gross compression" I have a 24X4X2 live console. There is a compressor on the inserts of each subgroup, on each main output, and on each monitor send. Subs 1 & 2 are set up as compressors due to those containing the drums. Sub 3 has teh instruments and is set up as a limiter only, smae with the monitors. Sub 4 has the vox and is set up equally as a compressor/limiter.Properly used, a compressor can make a singer the same volume whether whispering or screaming. Kick drums & Snares without compression do not sound as tight.
Now, over-use of compressors...Compressing for the hell of it with all output gains over +10db, yes that is excessive. And if anyone here really follows that method - go to www.dbxpro.com and look in their support pages. You will be looking for a document called Compression 101.
Read It,
Live It,
Love It.
