One thing I don't quite understand. Why is a standard CD limited to 74 minutes playing time?
I thought it would be a good idea to backup my record collection on CD. The idea was to ease the problem of playing the records. Some are on 78's, which nowadays means a separate turntable. Some are on LP, EP, and SP. Some are on ¼" loose reel tape, and some are on cassette. I've even got one record which is a 10" shellac playing at 45 rpm using a 78 needle! The quality of most of these records is mono lo-fi as the originals were recorded in the period 1917-1940.
To make this operation as cheap as possible, I thought I would record at 22kHz 8 bits. When I transfer a record to the computer (*.wav) at max. quality a minute of music uses about 9MB, whereas at 22kHz a minute uses about 2 MB.
Why can't I put four times the number of records on a CD at the lower quality?
I've not found a URL that can help me with this question.Any help would be helpful - thanks
