I agree that nailing things to the wall, can be detrimental. But most material out of serious studios come in at a lot hotter than
-14Dbu. Unless you plan to stick an expander on it(very unwise) by the time you have added even subtle compression you are going to lose at least 4db. Fine for Bob to say that, but I would love to hear the pop record that is mastered at -14Dbu average level, coz I ain't ever heard one yet!

-4 is obviously going for it, (too much in my opinion) but -6 is pretty much the standard. Transient's are really irrelevantbecause neither the gear or our ears are able to use this for any sensible, musical purpose. I limit my digital signal to -.01 as I don't want a flatlining data stream, but -0.3 or 0.5 is close enough. My general point earlier, is that like it or not pop/rock records these days are mastered loud, but it can still be either really pushed or done with some taste. I prefer the latter.
