Remastering a CD

My son has a demo of his group from a couple of years ago done in a studio. I'm not sure how to describe the sound but it seems too polite, they were a three piece & on stage sounded really good. This demo seems a bit lifeless three distinct instruments coming out of the speakers instead of a band sound. Is it possible to remaster this or do you need the master tapes?
