Re: put more money into mic, or mic-pre?

I have heard that the Rode is fine mic for the money. I don't believe you mentioned your recording gear.

The mic pre will make a ton of difference and I would not cheap out here as I have done and paid the price for...with a very high noise floor...around -60db...in the digital world this is not good.

Take a look at the PreSonus MP20 (dual channel) at about $499 street price. It has gotten good reviews. It has a nice feature with an on board pan control for each channel that pull in or stretch out the l/r soundstage as you choose with adding a mixer. This with 2 Rode 1's might be real sweet. The Rode's have a very low noise floor.
