Here's the usual advice for that question. A great pre can make an average mic sound great, but an average pre will prevent a great mic from sounding grwat. The worst solution is to compromize on both because you will want to upgrade, and you don't want to have to upgrade mics and pres. The second thing is once you have a great pre, you will be able to hear the differences between mics more clearly, and so be better enabled to make those decisions. Finally, you will likely end up with several mics because not all mics work for all things. Thus, a good pre is the best first investment. The grace will do fine. If you still have 500 left over, you can get a lot of good mics (The rode does not come to mind, but it might be fine). The Studio projects C1 is a fine mic - and you can afford a pair for your 500.
