Please Help with mic issue

209.240.220.205

Hello,

I am recording a solo project using gear that I purchased on my own. I am recording on my own so that I can be in complete control. I don't have a lot of money to spend on gear. I am recording computer-based. I am using Cakewalk and Soundforge with an Event sound card.

I have been using mainly an SM-57 for all-around recording such as vocals and acoustic guitar. I am using a mixer for EQ and gain before the computer input. I know that the SM-57 is not the best vocal mic. My problem is that I am not really getting the greatest vocal sound. (or acoustic guitar for that matter) The actual recording that I get is weak, and needs boosting in Soundforge. The result is what you would expect: a weak sound that's been boosted. To get any volume, the levels have to be cranked on the mixer to the point of getting a lot of noise.

I won't be spending a lot of money on this, I've already spent enough. So my question is, should I get a mic preamp to get a good smooth mic sound into the computer, or should I get a decent mic. Mic preamps that I've looked at aren't too expensive. But of course I could get into some big money with a new mic. To me, it's really pointless to read in a catalog about how warm and rich a mic sounds without really hearing it. So that's why I'm coming to y'all. I've noticed that pretty much all of the big mic manfacturers like AKG, Sennheiser, Bear, etc. make decent entry level condenser mics in the $300-$400 range.

So should I go with a mic preamp to get a better mic sound, or get a better mic? Please suggest specific mics or preamps. And no, I won't be spending more than $300-$400. (Now I have to think of how to come up with THAT!)

I really appreciate everyone's help.

Thanks,

Brvheart
