I do not think that the "b" version is much better, although I have used both I havent putthem head to head. The b version is a little quieter but I would save the $100 and get the older one. If the price is close though you might want to consider the new one. I see used ones for around $200.Also, try interesting things with your recordings. Try to put the 57 and the new mic on a guitar, pan hard... add a 15 ms delay and pan opposite a channel... compress just the reverb...
Part of working on your own is the ability to create your own interesting sound.
