Re: DI box

It really depends on the tone you are looking for. Are you thinking of a clean "bass into the board sound", a little warmth to the bass instrument itself in the playing/recording context or are you looking for a DI that will emulate the sound of a driven bass amp? What gear do you have (amp, bass), and what style of music?

Just as there are MILLIONS of bass guitarists out there, and each has his or her particular sound, there are DI boxes out will either love or hate.

I've been having good success with the Original Sans Amp Bass DI (now replaced by the Bass Driver DI). I use it instead of miking up my mian cabinet in my live and studio rigs. I still mike up my top end cabs, as they produce a distorted, guitar like tone that is way too noisey and fuzzy through ANY DI. My style of music is serious improvisation ala King Crimson and TU, just to name a few for reference...

These are decent boxes if you are looking for a DI sound that mimics a miked up tube bass amp. I've tried either unit with their balance controls over to the straight setting and didn't like them. They are pretty much designed for a "bass amp tone" through either Pa or recording mixer. You may differ and want clean, or maybe not.

I'm also in the process of designing/building a preamp/DI based on the old Alembic 2FB preamp, but with a transformer balanced output, and some other tone control features.

My advice- get out there to any music stores and try EVERY box you can get your hand on through a decent mixer and speakers.
