No you don't want gain in a DI box.
If you do a google for Direct Box, you'll turn up a tons of schematics.
A decent sounding transformer is just about as expensive as buying a cheap direct box.If you're going to spend more the $100, I'd look at a Presonus Blue Tube. It's a stereo tube (12AX7) preamp, that has unblanced and balanced outs that can be used at the same time. This gives you 2 channels of DI, plus a nice little tube pre that will make yer bass come to life.
