If you want to DIY, understand that this DI needs to be active so you can present a really high impedance to the pickups. A transformer-based DI would likely sound like crap.

If you want to try out a couple good for the bass, try the Countryman Type 85 and the Aphex 1404 Punch Factory. Despite what others may claim, the 85 is probably still the de facto touring standard for bass and acoustic guitar. Any compression would then be done at the console. On the other hand, the 1404 includes an opto-compressor that works quite well on the bass, and it gives you control over exactly how your signal is processed in the FOH mix.
