Re: Mixers - is there something like a "tape monitor" loop?

OK, if I'm understanding what you want to do, and you have a mixer like the Mackie 1202VLZ-Pro, then yes you can use the alt outs for sending to a compressor and return it to another pair of channels for adding into the main mix. Just make sure you don't have the return from the compressor also assigned to the alt outs or you'll create a feedback loop.

Inserts are typically found on input channels where they come between the head amp and the rest of the channel. Insert jacks are typically TRS jacks where the tip is the send, the ring is the return and the sleeve is ground (certain British mixers swap the tip and ring). Using this jack requires an insert cable that has a single TRS plug that goes into the insert jack on one end and two TS plugs that go to the input and output of the outboard processor on the other.

Inserts can also often be found on the busses of larger mixers that allow you to process whatever you assign to that buss, and then mix it into the main mix. So whatever you want to commonly compress, you can assign to buss 1, insert a compressor on buss 1, and then assign buss 1 to the main mix.

Understand that if you want to send multiple sources to the same compressor, then you're going to be compressing them collectively. If that's what you want then that's what you'll be getting. If you want to compress each of them individually, then you would need more compressors. If the sources are line level, you can route them through the compressors first, and then bring them into the mixer.
