Mixers - is there something like a "tape monitor" loop?

Is there a way to put say.....3 of the 5 channels through a process and after it goes to the main mix? I have a Behringer mixer now ( lots of dead spots on sliders, need a new one. Maybe a used mackie?) I see there is an "Alt 3-4" output. If there is not something like a tape monitor, would it be the same effect to use the Alt output for these 3 (or whatever) channels and put that processed bit in another set of inputs to all go to the main outputs?
