It seems to me that you glossed over some legitimate questions. Will the larger driver have less distortion due to lower excursion, for instance? It may, but how important that is depends on design and low-pass frequency. Power compression? Depends on voice coil size, venting, box type, etc. Not easy to put a long throw 8 in a sealed cab and have less compression due to voice coil heating than a vented gap design in a vented box. In the case of a small, sealed box, will this be a more or less expensive approach depending on driver cost plus amp cost plus amp longevity plus possible complexity/cost if lf eq if needed? That said, I certainly agree with your comment about WinISD (though I haven't checked the latest version to see if it models xmax limitations, I happen to use something else for that.) I also agree that from a value perspective, Pro JBL drivers are not a real bargain for the home at current retail. Some older models have better T/S parameters than 2226 for instance and can be had cheaper, as well as Eminence, Adire, and others. In the end, sealed, bandpass, vented, horn loaded each have advantages/disadvantages based on the pragmatic issues of size, appearance, complexity, cost, heat, room placement, etc., though sometimes people pick one factor, say phase characteristics, to the exclusion of all others.
