Most DVD/CD decks send a two channel feed, which normally goes to a 5.1/7.1/Dolby decoder in a surround receiver to split the various signal feeds to the respective power amps. Taking a two channel feed to a traditional mixer will only give you stereo. What you propose will only work if your deck has onboard surround de-coding with separate analog outs for L/C/R/Lr/Rr/Sub.
