Here's an interesting idea I've been screwing around with. I love the sound of a string bass but I don't have nearly enough money to get one. I've noticed that my older Yamaha 5-string has a good tone unplugged/unamplified. This is a regular solid body electric bass. I close miced it (4" from the strings) just beyond the end of the fretboard with an AKG C414B-ULS set in Cardiod for the proxy effect and added a little bass on the eq. The gain has to be pretty high so a low noise mic and mic pre are pretty key. Also, breathing noises, the sound of the bass rubbing my cloths, and creakes from the leather ends of my strap needed addressing.
Just something to screw around with. If you or someone you know has also experemented with this, tell me about your experience.
Thanks,Michael
