I have never recorded a clavicord but it sounds similar to a harpsicord or celeste. When I have recorded those instruments I have ahd best results with the lid removed and two mics a few feet above the strings. I liked the smaller diaphram mics more than large diaphram mics for this application. My first choice woudl be a pair of B&Ks. Second would be the earthworks QTC 1 if your in a good sounding space. Third woudl be an ORTf configuration above the strings with perstective of your choice. I would use AKG 451s if I had them, neuman km184s or Audio Technica 4041s would be reasonable substitutes.Youll need a very quiet preamp. I would use a solid state design.
As for analog vs digital, I would only use analog tape if I had good DBX for it. It wont be quiet enough otherwise. I might compress the whole mix 2-4dB with an optical compressor.
