Recording a clavichord--advice needed

12.79.0.252

Hi,

This is my first post on the Pro Audio Asylum. My friend posts on several of the boards and recommended this one for my question.

I am a clavichordist, and would like to record on my instruments. The clavichord is a very quiet instrument which is usually recorded up close. Players usually feel as though the sound of a clavichord is best when you literally stick your face right above the soundbound.

It is very rare to find a recording of the clavichord that doesn't either pound one's ears or sound unlike the real sound. New clavichord recordings are usually recorded digitally. The builder of a couple of my instruments says that he has achieved a better sound quality with cassette tape than with digital recordings.

I have a Concord Audio reel-to-reel deck and am interested to know what anyone thinks about microphones that would capture the sounds of a clavichord well. Additionally, if anyone has any experience recording the clavichord, I would be interested to know more about their experiences.
