Ok, well if its headphones you are talking about, they fall into two catagories in studio's. Those that are used by artists for foldback during overdubs and those that are used for "listening". I have an engineer friend of mine who is very keen on headphones and he uses Sennheiser HD600's. These are great as headphones go, I like them very much. Of course you have Stax Electrostatics and alike, but I think you would find most engineers are not interested enough in listening on headphones to warrant spending that money. The other type commonly used in studio's are by requirement the "closed" type. These are chosen for their sound isolation properties rather than highest sound quality issues.

I would say that when it comes to headphone amplifiers there are good arguments for esoteric class A headphone amps, though good proprietary designs will yield fine results anyway. (Keith AKA SSL tech will be able to give you more the run down on this as he knows whats going on inside them.) Those fitted to the average studio console will most likely fall into the latter category.

There are a lot of myths about gear used in studio's. Generally it has to be well designed, I have seen too many Hi-Fi poweramps, that either just don't deliver or have serious reliability issues. Many larger commercial studio's are up and running 18 hours a day so reliability is a real issue.

Pro audio gear can sometimes be a solution to getting wonderful replay systems at home, however most of the good pro gear is expensive, though maybe not as expensive as some of the hi end consumer audio. If you are in doubt about what to buy I would recommend you seek out a professionals help just to narrow down your options.

If it is headphones you are interested in, perhaps you could give some details of your budget. As mentioned above the HD600's are great for the money (about £200 retail as I remember it).

Regards

Roland
