"The cheap consumer (Sony) recevers have so much bass boost at "flat"...they will make you gag."I believe the Maggies (particularly with the Nordost) that will make the difference in this system. With ~$270 for electronics and source, in my experience Sony is a good buy. While I wouldn't compare the Sonys with the best of the best, I've not heard them display the bass boost of which you speak.
The Yamahas to my ear, display a peakiness in the lower treble that quickly grows tiresome. I tend to prefer errors of omission as opposed to those of commission as I find it much easier to ignore missing information than to ignore spurious information, especially in the upper midrange and lower treble.
