The inference of my friend was that in the early amps, the shielding between filament and the HV windings of the HV transformer was inadequate (or nonexistent?). This resulted in buzz on the 6SN7s. He did not say how to define "early" or exactly what models this would pertain to. If the OP is technically competent it would be a good idea to install either a separate filament tranny for the front end OR to run the front end filaments off the LV tranny, which evidently did not suffer from this problem. Now this is all assuming that what he is hearing is 60-cycle hum or buzz.
