Hi Everyone ,Freezing here , but amps keep me warm (:-)
Should the Driverstage Common buss ( 0vdc ) be connected to the chassis ground ? I note that when following the proceedure in manual ..Checkout Proceedure section 2 ...states that measure from any unpainted chassis point and the caps +ve & -ve's rails respectively .I didnt get any voltage reading here , and since I was trying to track down a low level humm , I started to experiment with grounding.
I had one amp that was dead quiet , and another that wasnt . So I test both amps , and find that both are wired exactly the same ( they should be , I wired them ! ) ,,,but , confused only for a few seconds , I take my meter to the Driverstage common , and measure again ...this time I get the reaing I wanted ..+ 309.6 vdc or something like it . Since both amps were the same , but didnt sound the same , I moved onto the tubes . Swapping tubes around in the driver stage soon showed up what I wasnt ready for . Out of 8 Electro-Harmonix , I had 2 only that would be quiet when placed in Pos V2 or V1 ..with V2 being the most noticable . V3 & V4 didnt seem to have any impact , so they got the noisiest , actually I placed the noisiest in V3 . It seems I have 6 6SN7's with leakage in the Filaments ...and two that are alot better than the other 6 ! . Anyway , placing the best between the two amps , I now have two quiet DIY M60's again . BUT ..what about the grounding ?...my test were done with shorting out the RCA connection point , And I have mine modded permananetly for now to be SE , as I dont own any Balanced output preamp or source . Should the driverstage common buss be connected to the chassis ?? or is the manual instructions a typo , and was meant to say ' place your meter's Neg term on the Driverstage Common Buss , and the meter's Pos to the +ve & -ve rails where rectification has taken place .
