Hello.Yes, it is a Granite 657. The player has two outputs. One is solid state, and output is fixed. The other has a variable tube output using 6922 (I use Valvo E188CC/7308) and a JAN Philips (I know...) 6X4 rectifier. These days, as I am running direct, I go with the tube output.
Fortuitously, this past weekend, a friend allowed me to bring the player over to compare with his Electrocompaniet, which has all of the upgrades except the spider. My goal was to see if indeed the Granite was at the level of what I consider one of the best players. And, if not, I would be moving to either an Electrocompaniet player or DAC, with a pair of EVS Ultimate Attenuators, to continue running CD direct.
Both players ran through a Rogue 99 Magnum preamp. It was quite interesting, almost a classic tube versus solid state kind of question. In short, the Granite WAS at the same level, at least in my mind, and it was a question of where one's priorities lie. The EC is more crystalline and probably resolves better. The Granite had a great midbass bloom that the more neutral Electrocompaniet player lacked. Also, I was VERY disappointed in the EC's bass, it lacked power and authority, whereas the the Granite seemed quite fullsome. Being that my experience has always shown the Granite takes at least one or two steps forward when run direct, I would not be suprised in the least if it was a good bit better than the EC if we tried the Granite in that manner. At this point, the Granite works better for me, so I won't be moving away from it.
