Re: Bright speaker problems, yes we are out here!!.

Hi,

Thanks for your responses--I thought the board was dead!

Did I say output tubes? Sorry, I wrote that at 2 am. I meant input tubes. I have the old-style chassis M60. The tubes came with the amp and the lettering has worn off. The bases are red, if that helps. From reading the Atma-sphere website, it seems that the tube type doesn't make a major difference.

My whole system is as follows: Merlin TSMs, McIntosh C2200 preamp, M60 amp, McIntosh MVP831 CD/DVD, JA Michell turntable, Magnum Dynalab Etude tuner, Monster Power conditioner. I'm using Mapleshade speaker cable, and Monster Cable interconnects.

While I have little doubt that some people can hear the difference between interconnects and speaker cables, I'm unfortunately not one of them. Despite my doubts that cabling makes a difference, I have auditioned a couple of brands and honestly the change, if there was any, wasn't discernable to my ear. Aside from that, this is a major, clearly audible problem, so I'm thinking that it's going to require a big change rather than a tweek.

My room? I live in a traditional NY City loft--that means it's one big shoebox with little in the way of room division. It's 22 feet wide, 150 feet long. Brick walls, wood floor, 16 foot wood beam ceiling, lots of skylights. The URL I've attached is a view of 1/3 of the apartment; the other 2/3 were behind me. The green shelf at the far end of the room is where the stereo is now. The speakers are on stands in front of the green shelf most of the time; however, I should mention they sound somewhat better when I put them up on the bookshelf--perhaps because this placement puts my ears 18" below the axes of the tweeters.

Thanks for all your help!

John
