Actually, there is a way to shunt some of the current that passes through the bottom stage so that it does not all have to pass through the cascode tube section, using resistors and a bypass cap. It's well described in Morgan Jones' book; I don't remember the details, and I have no idea whether it would per se affect sound quality.
