Well,I tried some 12SL7s in V1 and V2 straight in as you suggested
and the first impression was that if anything a little gain was lost
or some detail was missing.This seems at odds with the expected result,
that being more gain with maybe some noise ( its still dead quiet).
So out of interest I tried modelling the circuit in TubeCAD - and yes
it drops a little gain when you simply replace SN with SL in a stock setup.
I tried both the stock and the Speltz mod to the load and CCS tail resistors ( which does loose some gain - not what I need).
Any ideas here for achieving some more dBs
