DK, don't despair. I recently took the MP3 plunge and also have a VPI JMW-10 arm. Unlike Steve and the many others on this site, I am an electronic neophyte without any DIY skills, yet balanced analog salvation can still be had. The junction box on the VPI arm is too small to change the RCA's to balanced connectors and even a DIN connector won't fit. However, VPI (732 583-6895, ask for Mike) will send a new junction box with phono wire coming out of the rca holes for $65, to yourselp or any cable maker you want. Mine was sent to Silver Audio(800 570-7881 or max@silveraudio.com) who were willing to connect their SilverBreeze phono cable($400) to the outgoing phono wires and make it all look neat and professonal. Please check with the cable maker of your choice, as VPI has gotten requests like this in the past but has never found a cable maker willing to go through the trouble.Having said all that, The rca to balanced phono cable as outlined in the owner's manual and alluded to in Ralph's post IS a valid option. In fact, this is what VPI was using when I spoke to them. However, VPI admitted that in a high RFI area this could be promblematic. Silver Audio, who was willing to make a rca-balanced phono cable with a money back garantee, was not in favor of this configuration , having less then optimal results when tried with other customers. So it may be worth a try, but make sure you have money back garantee from whatever cable maker your dealing with.
Is the MP3 worth all this trouble? IMHO, yes. My MP3 relaced an Audible Illusions M3, which was and is an excellent preamp. However, the across the board sound improvement was of such a degree, that it kind of shocked me.
Hope this helps.
