Hi altecys . GM , thank you very , very much for the lead on the 931-12 mantarays . Kurt at brownell sound knows the guys at great plains but had no idea they were having the horns manufactured . He thinks those are the best of don keels designs , and the best 1 inch horns he tested , says hes tested them all . Sorry for any mispelling , Im only passing this info along , not promoting it as I dont have the expierience to promote anything at this point . I called great plains and talked to a Bill (who worked at altec!) and am ordering the horns monday . The price is very reasonable . The box design process was about an hour , fun , and way over my head , but here is the tech . The program he used was desighned by ted tollesski . its used by jbl on box design and by EV as of late . It includes a standing wave calculator . He recomended x-over at around 80hz so we could coax the most performance out of the 3156s . So , I will let my jbl sub handle the big bottom . The box design he came up with was 2.5 cu. ft. tuned to 62hz , with two 4 inch ports at 2.14 long . He then asked me what shape i wanted . We played with the numbers until the standing wave calculater showed no nodes of any significance . He then went back and rechecked to see if the dimensions would mess with the tuning . We went back and forth three times and ended up -3db down at 80hz with the afore mentioned specs at 24h 20w 11d dimensionally . He thinks the 3156s will excell in this box . I just pretty much sat and nodded my head . Also the mantaray horns should cross between 1k and 1.2k . The 902s and 3165s should both be happy here . I hope to build the boxes out of 3/4 birch plywwood very soon . I know theres some smart boys reading this so lay some brains or altec love on me . I know these arent youre typical altec boxes but they will be filled with altec componets , did i say thanks to GM for the horns ? That really was a big deal . BY
