very much a watered down New Order

New Order arose out of the band called Joy Division, - who were poised to become one of England's biggest and most popular bands. Like the Jam, - virtually unknown in the USA. Ian Curtis, the lead singer of Joy Division hung himself in his parent's kitchen on May 18th, 1980 on the eve of their US tour. Ian's lyrics were dark and angst filled; therapy. This band was the epitomy of what some called later called "death rock." Like Sigur Ros, who many consider to be influenced by Joy Division, (although Sigur Ros denies this), they were so otherworldly in their slow, dark, minimal, and space filled style, - that they scarcely resembled anything that anyone had heard before; what I would describe as pure Kafka set to music. They had 3 songs in the top ten of England's radio charts in 1980.

After Ian's suicide, the band continued as New Order, but radically changed the music to become a dance, synth-driven, yet still perverse, and pioneering band. Their drummer, Stephen Morris, is still considered to be one of the most influential, creative, and technically proficient players in the biz. His foundation, of post-disco-jazz, polyrhythmic dance drumming, - set the stage for that '80s dance sound. Early Cure did a lot of "borrowing" from Joy Division, - and early Depeche Mode and many others did a lot of "borrowing" from New Order, as well as Kraftwerk as Tunenut mentioned. New Order had a number of "Club" hits that were incredibly influential....

Cheers,

With your feet on the air and your head on the ground, try this trick and spin it, your head'll collapse if there's nothing in it then you'll ask yourself, where is my mind?
