I was quite skeptical when Microsoft, in their own self interest, promoted the home computer as the new home entertainment center. But I am also seeing it happen, although not as Microsoft quite intended. One of my friends gets music either in flac or ape (lossless) formats, keeps it all on hard drive, plays it directly from those compressed formats, sends the output through D/A converter, good amps, good speakers, and it's a completely viable system that he can control from his listening chair.
