The grand unified theory of computers, home audio and home video (which drove -- and continues to drive -- a lot of the "smart guys'" thinking) which predicted the creation and eventual triupm of some mother-of-all-devices gadget to perform all of the functions now performed by separate, unconnected devices is just that . . . a theory that has a small, if any, basis in fact.
