I would agree that both DSD and 20/24 PCM remastered recordings, such as the ones you mentioned above from Sony, sound equally good and perhaps would be nearly indistinguishable, assuming you could compare the same version of each. I believe that most (maybe all?) xrcd discs are PCM masters, and most of these sound quite good indeed -- maybe the equal of or exceeding that of an equivalent DSD master if it existed. I would also go so far as to say that some original DSD-mastered recordings from Telarc (CD version) actually sound much worse than a lot of PCM recordings. I recently compared some of my early ECM jazz CDs of Keith Jarett's trio -- I think some of these were issued in the late 80's or early 90's -- to a couple of recent Telarc DSD-based jazz CDs, and found that I vastly preferred the older ECM (PCM) recordings, which to my ears had better dynamic range, overall resolution, and even soundstaging. I have no doubts that DSD mastering can yield excellent results but so can PCM -- the latter is a proven technology, and if implemented correctly can give outstanding sound.
