The hardest thing for me with digital, even at a high level of performance, is to suspend critical judgment and stop tweaking the unit. The musical flow of good vinyl is just so satisfying and forgiving of minor flaws in the TT playback chain that it is, as you say, almost like comparing apples and oranges to compare vinyl to RBCD. But at the risk of claiming privilege, I must report that there are a couple of things to be done with the SCD-1 that take its RBCD performance over the top into vinyl territory (and that take its SACD performance even further). These are things that to my knowledge are not done by the pro modders who focus solely on the clock and the analog stage. First is getting off the AC grid and onto low-impedance SLA batteries. The presentation blooms in width, height & depth, hanging in front of and behind the speakers, with greatly improved dynamics, instrument body, and meat-on-the-bones realism. Then, after adding discrete voltage regulators to the power section and eliminating multiple levels of down-regulation in the transport, the resolution and transparency of the transport section moves to a much higher level (surpassing the Lyra Helikon cartridge by a good margin). My vinyl rig still presents a slightly sweeter treble, but taken as a whole, the modded SCD-1's RBCD is superior, inviting suspension of critical judgment in the manner of good vinyl. RBCD is just so difficult to get right.Dave
