About 10 years ago, Robert Harley published an article in Stereophile on jitter. It covered a variety of topics and included measures of jitter performance. He found higher levels of jitter coded on CDs than in players or DACs. I have also read where record producers are dissappointed in the sound of CD masters sent to them for approval from pressing plants; they don’t sound like the master tape they sent them. The implication of these articles is that the operations at the pressing plant can undo the good good work of musicians, engineers, and producers. I have some 20-year old, first-generation digital recordings in my collection that sound as good as my best SACDs. Indeed, the vast majoity of my CDs sound flat out good.
