do I even have a hi-res player (yet) but I rarely miss a new Mahler release and haven't for many years. I have all of MTT's Mahler.Your sonic assessment (at least on my RB system) is dead accurate. These are outstanding recordings. Its hard for me to imagine how the recordings or the orchestra's performance could be improved. But whether you will consider these performances to have historic value will, I suspect, depend on your expectations, not those of some musicologist.
For myself, in general I find MTT's Mahler to be a bit on the bland side, too smooth, too beautiful. I prefer a more dramatic, forceful, performance. For example, of those available in SACD I would very quickly reach for Zander's performances in preference to MTT's, although I'm still out on MMT's 7th. I've only listened to it a couple of times but I do like the way he does the 1st movement.
FWIW exploring alternative performances of Mahlers works can be very rewarding. If you are interested in the performances of others there are some very knowlegable folks in the Music forum who have a broad knowledge of Mahler performances and the general performance styles of the conductors.
