Why has the emergence of SACD multi-channel in any way precluded your enjoyment of SACD two-channel? Why would a "come back" for SACD two-channel rekindle your support for the format? SACD is an eloquent solution for both multi-channel and two-channel, with no compromises for either.
Perhaps the root cause for you no longer supporting SACD is because as you state ***"The best SACDs do sound great through my Sony SA777ES, but the vast majority of them sound little if any better than good CDs"***
As far as your statement "I know I'm pretty much alone here" regarding your belief that most SACDs don't sound any better than CD, you are *not* alone, although I strongly disagree. As I mentioned in a recent to Teresa (this thread I think) there is a rising tide in this group, notably among two-channel "purists", that are voicing similar sentiments.
Regarding your multi-channel experience, perhaps new revelations about rear channel positioning brought forth here the last few days may encourage you to do some more experimenting.
