Re: stereo and surround SACD

Michael is right about how Philips was early on convinced that SA-CD should also be about multichannel. I was asked to assist with the first multi-channel tests, and in 1996 Philips had designed and built a 8 track DSD recorder of the highest quality. On it the first ever complete hybrid stereo and multichannel SA-CD was recorded in Budapest, with a 'live' session with audience that was specially arranged, with Ivan Fischer and the Budapest Festival Orchestra performing a series of great classical pieces to show off the diverse qualities of the new format. This disc was introduced at the IFA in Berlin in 1999 when SA-CD was introduced in Europe. We were lucky that in the morning of the day of the recording the late Jerry Goldsmith was rehearsing with the orchestra, and we recorded most of that rehearsal and played it to him. He was so thrilled with the quality that the recording plans for the now released SACD of Jerry's film music were born. All this and much more was being done with the initiative and support of Philips and Sony, in a way that is unrivalled in recording history. It is indeed a disappointment that we live in an age were quality is not the main concern to the majority, but nevertheless the many SA-CD surround recordings prove what a breakthrough we have made in recording history. You should also read Demery's chronicles, an inside history of a person who managed to convince both developers, recording engineers, artists and the corporate managers that the qualities of SA-CD surround were worth making it the next step in audio format development. http://www.superaudiocenter.com/DemRep.htm .
