It was actually better than I expected but you must remember I listen in 2 channel stereo. The strings were smoother than CD but it had less detail so overall not as good sounding as CD but easier on the ears. Massed strings on CD hurt my ears. My feeling is Dolby Digital sounds smoother than CD because it is 20 Bit and has less resolution than CD because it is "lossly" compressed. Dolby digital does not even come close to SACD or DVD-Audio BTW. Even though the Video shot all in Spain was beautiful I have since sold this on eBay.Classical DVD rentals included Amadeus (actually a movie about Mozart but it has a lot of music), Berlioz: Symphonie Fantastique (which sounded terrible); Delos DVD Music Breakthrough and Delos DVD Space Spectacular including Also Sprach Zarathustra (these were only fair).
Of course all listening in 2 channel Dolby Digital, as I do not have DTS or multi-channel so I am not the best person to answer you questions except to say Rent before you buy as some of these sound horrible.
