I would have thought that using the Tape Out signal would be exactly right.
The stereophile review (from years back) says, "there is no active circuitry or buffering between the line-level inputs and the tape-out jacks". If correct, that seems to say that going from your phono preamp to Headphone amp should be the same as taking the signal from Tape Out to your headphone amp. But this doesn't seem the case in your experience.
But I do note this line, from the same review: " The SP9 Mk.II has addressed this situation by reducing the gain of the CD input by 12dB."
Are you perhaps piping your phono preamp into the CD input?
