RE: Question re: Yamaha DVD-S1800BL when playing DVD-Audio/SACD

There are DVD and AUDIO indicators that should both light up when playing the DVD-A part of a DVD-A, otherwise I think just the DVD one if playing the DTS track of a DVD-A say. Also IIRC there is one that lights up when decoding DTS, so that would clue you too since you'd be using the DTS decoding for analog output.

Never paid much attention to the indicators since I can't see them from my seat. Using a DVD player for audio without some sort of (at least small) display is crippling, there's so much info you won't have; you'll need one to set up at least.

My S1800 is a backup for my backup SACD/DVD-A player (the 980 I mentioned in the other thread). I never used the analog outputs much, mostly just the HDMI, so don't know about the 4.0 speaker thing, but it *should* work OK when you tell it you have no center speaker.

One thing this player does that is kind of unusual for *DVD* players is it allows you to program tracks for playback. It's my only DVD/BD player out of many that can do that.

The CD tray is flimsy. It's flimsy in most $1k current DVD/BD players too. And in some several times that cost...don't lean on it. What do you want for $80? I wouldn't agonize over this player too much, it'll help you out of where you are now, and at the least makes a fine DVD-A/SACD backup if it's not up to your minimum standards.
