well, evidence of brickwall filtering doesn't necessarily indicate that the disc was upsampled from "44.1/16" (which is what you claimed, but have not substantiated)as i've explained before some studio equipment have filters embedded even before it gets to the ADC. you have to remember, until quite recently, most equipment designers would treat content >20kHz as essentially noise that needs to be filtered out for a cleaner signal.
my e-mu 1212m filters out frequencies above 20kHz even at 96kHz sampling rate - iCHi says it's a trade-off to get higher S/N and lower distortion which sounds reasonable to me.
i've noticed on my previous amp that presence of ultrasonic noise can "soften" the overall sound - filtering restores the crispness.
